FAIR TRADE: BACKGROUND

WHAT IS IT?
Fair trade is a concept and a business model that focuses on the development of equal payment for workers in third world countries. Their goal is to implement better trading and working conditions to sustain a higher and safer environmental standard. The movement promotes partnership between consumers and producers and allows for a fairer alternative to conventional trade. If such exchange occurs and is recognized by Fair Trades guidelines of ‘fair exchange’, the products produced will be labeled as a ‘Fair Trade Product’ for consumers to recognize. It is notably focused on exports such as cocoa, coffee beans, sugar, tea, and other grown and handcrafted items from third world countries.

Ran by Fair Trade International (FLO), this project will focus on the North American Fair Trade members. The North American Fair Trade concept (including United States and Canada) both has different ways and techniques of understanding and promoting the goal. By making a positive impact, many actors including communities, businesses and individuals help bring in ideas and participate in the overall practice, through distribution in the productions, to paying fairer wages to consumers purchasing Fair Trade certified items within local stores.
